Vidya's Sudden Head Shave Decision

Bengaluru’s Monday morning traffic was already at its worst as employees rushed into the glass-covered tech park, carrying laptops, coffee cups and tired faces. Inside the office, Chiranjeevi, a fifty-year-old senior manager known for his strict discipline and sharp tongue, was already reviewing the project status when Vidya finally entered. She was late, and it was impossible not to notice how rushed she looked—her thick hip-length hair was still slightly wet from her morning head bath, hanging loose and uneven because she had not even had time to comb it properly. Most of her coworkers were already seated, looking neat and ready for the day, while Vidya quietly walked toward her desk hoping nobody would make an issue out of it. Chiranjeevi looked up, stared at her for a few seconds, and said, “Vidya. My cabin. Now.” She entered a few minutes later, and he calmly asked, “What is the current status of the project? When are we sending the final presentation? And why am I asking you these things when you are the project manager?” Vidya answered carefully, but his questions kept coming, each one more direct than the last. Finally, his eyes moved toward her loose, messy hair. “You came late, and you came looking like this?” he asked sharply. Vidya said, “Sir, I overslept. I took a head bath and I had to rush.” Chiranjeevi leaned back and replied, “That is your personal problem, Vidya. You are managing an important project, not walking into college after a weekend party.

Look at yourself. Late, unprepared, and completely careless. Is this the level of responsibility you want people to associate with you?” Vidya stood silently, her face burning with embarrassment as he continued, “Get yourself together. Your excuses, your attitude, and this careless way of showing up—I don't want to see this nonsense again.” The moment Vidya heard him say that, she finally looked up and said, “Sir, I understand I was late, but the office is not perfect either. For the last few days I have been working overtime, staying back late, and even my salary was delayed this month. I had one bad morning.” Chiranjeevi’s face changed immediately. “Don’t start this bullshit with me, Vidya. You are seriously standing here and using salary delays and overtime as an excuse for coming late and looking completely unprepared? You think you are the only one working your ass off here?” Vidya's patience broke. “Then why are you only targeting me? Other people come late too ” Chiranjeevi stood up. “Because you are the fucking project manager, Vidya! You are supposed to set an example, not walk in here looking like you just rolled out of bed.” His voice became loud enough for the nearby employees to notice, and heads slowly turned toward the glass cabin as people in the cubicles began quietly watching and whispering. Vidya, now angry and embarrassed, snapped, “Fine. If my long hair is such a fucking problem for you from the beginning, I’ll cut the damn thing.”

Chiranjeevi pointed toward the door and shouted, “Then do it first! But don’t come back and act like cutting your hair will fix your fucking attitude. Get your work done and get me that final PPT draft before lunch. you know what, my own wife, i shave her head every month, you are just an employee so be aware!” Vidya walked out without another word, returned to her cubicle with her face burning, threw her bag hard onto the desk, pulled out her laptop, and began typing the final presentation draft with anger and frustration building inside her. Vidya sat at her cubicle and continued working on the final PPT, but her mind was still inside Chiranjeevi’s cabin, replaying every word he had shouted at her. Her long, wet hair kept falling across her face as she typed, and she repeatedly pulled it back and tucked it behind her ears, becoming more irritated every time it slipped forward again. “Fuck,” she muttered under her breath, pushing the heavy hair behind her shoulder before continuing to type. A few minutes later, one of her female friends came near her desk and asked softly, “Vidya, what happened? We could hear Chiranjeevi sir shouting.” Vidya did not even look at her and simply said, “Nothing. Please, not now.” Her friend understood her mood and quietly walked away. As lunch time approached, Vidya saved her work, shut her laptop, picked up her phone, and left the office earlier than the others. A few coworkers noticed her walking toward the elevator and exchanged confused looks.

Outside the building, Vidya originally thought of getting a coffee and calming herself down, but she kept angrily replaying Chiranjeevi’s words in her head. Without properly realizing where she was going, she stopped in front of a nearby modern premium salon, touched her long hair, looked at the glass door for a moment, and walked inside without giving herself time to think twice. A male hairstylist greeted her politely, and Vidya immediately said, “I want a short haircut.” He looked at her long hair with surprise and said, “Short? You have really healthy hair, madam. There are many good styles we can try—bob cut, layered short cut, shoulder length, even a boy cut if you want a complete change.” Vidya sat silently in front of the large mirror, still angry, confused, and staring at her own reflection while the hairstylist gently combed her hip-length hair straight behind her, preparing for the first snip. The trimmer continued buzzing as the hairstylist worked carefully around the back and sides of Vidya's head, the guarded blade pushing her remaining hair shorter with every pass. “You know, madam, nowadays many women are going for boy cuts,” he said casually while cleaning around her nape. “Earlier, only very few customers would ask for it. Now many want to try shorter look. Last week also, actress Wamiqa came here for a short boycut after DC movie. These days people are much more open to drastic hairstyles.”

Vidya barely reacted. Her mind was still full of Chiranjeevi's voice. The hairstylist moved the trimmer around the side of her head and asked, “Feeling lighter now?” Vidya suddenly raised her hand. “Stop.” He immediately switched off the trimmer and looked at her through the mirror. “Anything wrong?” Vidya looked at her half-finished haircut for a few seconds and then said quietly, “Shave it off.” The hairstylist frowned. “Sorry?” She turned slightly toward him and repeated, “Remove the guard. Shave everything.” He stood there for a moment, clearly unsure if he had heard her correctly. “Madam, full shave? Completely bald?” Vidya took a breath and answered firmly, “Yes. Completely. Don't leave anything.” He looked at her once more, then nodded slowly. “Okay, if you are sure.” He removed the guard from the trimmer, and the sound of the bare blade filled the space as Vidya sat still and watched him bring it to the middle of her head. In one straight pass from the front toward the back, the remaining hair disappeared, leaving behind a narrow strip of dark stubble and a clearly exposed scalp. Vidya stared at the strip in the mirror, felt a brief shock, then told herself silently, It won't look bad. Fuck it. Just let it go completely. The guardless trimmer kept buzzing as the hairstylist continued from the strip he had made across the middle of Vidya’s head, taking away the remaining hair pass by pass. Each time the trimmer moved over her scalp, another section of hair disappeared,

and short dark stubble was left behind. Vidya watched herself in the mirror. Slowly seeing more and more of her scalp. For a moment, the reality of what she was doing hit her. How the hell am I going to go home like this? What am I going to tell my family? And tomorrow, how am I going to walk outside with a shaved head? she thought, watching another clump of short hair fall onto the cape. The hairstylist kept working quietly around the top while Vidya stared at her changing reflection. Then she took a deep breath and thought, Why am I panicking so much? It’s just fucking hair. I’m not doing anything wrong. It will grow back. Slowly, her fear began turning into irritation again as Chiranjeevi’s face came back into her mind. That bald fellow had the nerve to lecture me about looking professional, she thought angrily. He himself has no hair left, but suddenly my long hair was a fucking problem for him. The trimmer moved across another side of her head as Vidya clenched her jaw and continued arguing with him inside her own mind. Fine, Chiranjeevi. You wanted manageable hair, no? Look at this now. Happy? You bloody bald bastard. She kept staring into the mirror while the trimmer continued removing the last longer patches, and by the end, Vidya was no longer thinking about hiding her head—she was simply sitting there, angry at her boss and letting the shave continue. The hairstylist switched off the trimmer and looked at Vidya through the mirror.

“Done, madam.” Vidya ran her palm lightly over the top of her head and immediately felt the rough stubble. She looked at him and said. “No. I want it properly shaved. No stubble. Make it completely smooth.” The hairstylist smiled slightly, as if he finally understood exactly what she wanted, and said, “Okay, madam. Proper clean shave.” He wrapped the cape securely around her and applied shaving foam across her scalp, covering the short stubble from the front to the back and around both sides. Vidya sat quietly as he picked up a straight razor and began shaving carefully, one smooth stroke at a time, wiping the blade and moving across her scalp section by section. The foam slowly disappeared, and underneath it her scalp started looking clean and bare. He finished one round, checked her head with his fingers, and went back over the areas that still felt rough. Then he applied more foam and shaved again, carefully going over the same areas until almost nothing could be felt under his hand. He repeated the cleanup another time, checking around the crown, behind her ears, the nape, and every small patch where tiny stubble remained. Once he was satisfied, he cleaned her scalp, gave it a proper wash and a gentle head massage, then dried her completely bald head and brushed away the tiny loose hairs around her neck. Vidya looked into the mirror and touched her smooth scalp, seeing a completely bald version of herself for the first time.

She got up, put on her coat, picked up her things, and was about to leave when the hairstylist stopped her. “One minute, madam.” He applied a nice amount of shiner over her clean scalp and polished it lightly. It gave her head a smooth, shine look. Vidya paid the bill, gave herself one last look in the mirror, and walked out of the salon, heading back toward the office. Vidya walked through the entrance of the office with her coat on and her completely bald head uncovered, and the watchman was the first person to notice her. He looked at her for a moment, clearly confused, as if he was trying to remember whether he had seen her before. The receptionist looked up next, followed by the cleaner nearby, and soon a few employees turned their heads toward her. “Who is that?” someone quietly asked. Vidya continued walking without reacting until one of her coworkers suddenly looked closely and said, “Wait… that's Vidya.” For a few seconds, nobody said anything. The same Vidya who had walked into the office that morning with hip-length hair was now standing there with a smooth, shiny bald head. “No fucking way,” one of them whispered, while others stared at her in complete shock and disbelief. Vidya ignored the looks and walked straight to her cubicle as the whispers continued behind her. Soon it was time for the presentation, and she entered the meeting room with her laptop and files as if nothing unusual had happened.

When Chiranjeevi walked in and saw her, he stopped for a brief moment, clearly shocked by what she had actually done, but he said nothing and simply took his seat. The presentation began, and Vidya handled it professionally, answering questions and explaining the project clearly. The investors were satisfied. At the end, one of them smiled at her and said, “The presentation was excellent, Vidya. And honestly, your bald look is quite bold. Not everyone would have the confidence to walk into an important meeting like this.” Another investor nodded and said, “It suits your confidence. Very unexpected, but impressive.” The project was approved, and the company finally secured the tender, with employees around them celebrating the successful result. Vidya quietly returned to her desk, packed her personal belongings into her bag, took out an envelope containing her resignation letter, and walked toward Chiranjeevi's cabin. She knocked once, opened the door, and stepped inside.Chiranjeevi picked up Vidya's resignation letter, looked at her bald head, and gave a small sarcastic smile. “Well, you did it. At least now that fucking hair won't distract you, and maybe you'll start coming to the office on time.” Vidya stared at him and said, “Keep the job, sir. I'm done here,” before turning toward the door. His face immediately changed. “Don't act like shaving your head was some great achievement. Who the fuck asked you to do that?” Vidya stopped as he continued,

“I shave my wife's head every month because that's our personal choice, but you shaved yours in the middle of a workday because you got angry. If the investors weren't open-minded, this could have gone completely wrong.” Vidya turned back, her anger finally exploding. “Don't fucking pretend you had nothing to do with this. From morning you kept talking about my hair, my looks and how I should fucking present myself.” Chiranjeevi tried to respond, but Vidya raised her voice. “You know what? Fuck this job and fuck your standards. I shaved my head, and that's my fucking choice. But resigning from this place is also my choice.” She grabbed her bag, pushed the cabin door open hard and walked out, leaving the entire office staring as people silently tried to understand how one morning had turned into a scolding, a bald head, a successful project, and finally a resignation. By the time Vidya reached her room, she was exhausted and furious; she threw her coat and bag aside, pulled off the rest of her work clothes, and walked straight into the bathroom, turning on the cold shower and standing under the water with her freshly shaved head. Vidya stood under the cold shower and let the water run over her completely shaved head, washing away the last bit of stress from the salon and office. She closed her eyes as the cold water moved across her smooth scalp, and for the first time that day, she felt completely alone and quiet.

She took some shampoo in her hand, rubbed it over her bald head out of habit, then laughed slightly at herself. “What the fuck am I even doing?” she murmured, before properly washing her scalp and running her hands over the smooth skin again. She cleaned herself, used soap and conditioner, and stayed under the shower longer. She enjoyed the strange feeling of having no heavy hair sticking to her back or falling over her face. By the time she came out, she felt lighter, calmer, and completely different from the angry woman who had walked out of the office. Still slightly wet, Vidya lay on her bed naked, slowly rubbing her smooth bald head and staring at the ceiling for a while. Then she suddenly sat up and said, “Fuck this afternoon. I'm not staying here and thinking about that bastard.” She got dressed in a classy gold shiny slip dress, looked at her bald reflection one more time, and headed out to a nearby pub. As Vidya walked through the entrance, a few women turned to look at the confident bald woman entering alone, but she simply walked inside with a confident smile, ready to enjoy the whole night. Vidya settled into the pub and decided she was done thinking about the office, Chiranjeevi, the resignation, or anything else that had ruined her day. She ordered a drink, lit a cigarette, and soon found herself laughing and relaxing like the morning had happened to someone else. She ate whatever she felt like ordering, from chicken and mutton to fish, drank again and again.

Slowly she joined the crowd near the dance floor. Her smooth bald head caught people's attention, but this time Vidya did not feel embarrassed when women looked at her; she simply danced, smoked, laughed, and enjoyed herself. After a while, she noticed a small stage near the centre and, carried away by the mood, walked up and took the microphone. “You know what?” she said, looking at the crowd. “People are scared of losing hair like it's the end of the got damn world. It's just hair. That's all. If you want to cut it, cut it. If you want to shave it, just fucking shave it. Don't let people decide how you should look.” A few women immediately started clapping, and one of them shouted, “oh yesss, baby you look hot,  will also shave my head just like you...” Another woman laughed and said, “Same here. My husband loves my long hair but you know what, fuck it will shave it off ” Soon more people were cheering for Vidya as she handed the microphone back and returned to the dance floor. The night continued with music, laughter, food, drinks and smoke, while Vidya danced among the crowd with a wide smile on her polished bald head. By the time the party slowly came to an end, she was no longer the frustrated project manager who had walked out of the office that afternoon—she was simply Vidya, bald, happy, drunk, laughing, and enjoying her freedom.
